Why Your Next Diet Will Most Likely Fail

By: Steve Gray

Any casual walk in public these days will make it it very apparent why there is such a huge demand for diets in America. Did you know that over 60% of Americans are over weight and over 30% are obese? With numbers like those, more and more people are looking for a viable and sustainable answer for weight loss.

Just when you thought you have found the "perfect diet", the scary realization is that you probably haven't. In fact your current or next diet will likely fail. Its doubtful that failure of a diet is caused by the diet itself. More likely, its the person on the diet. That's actually good news because you can do something about it.

What's the difference between glass being half full or half empty? Perspective, right? With diets though its not an issue of positive thinking, its an issue of time expectation. When we are lead to diets that promise "overnight" success we are setting ourselves up for failure. So what would happen if you changed your time expectation?

Its not the diet that makes a difference, its the habits. Imagine yourself reaching for a piece of fruit instead of junk food, walking instead of watching TV. It probably sounds hard right now. But you can do it with ease and without thinking about it. The only way to get to that point is by changing habits, and replacing your bad habits with good ones.

If you were looking for the secret, I'm sorry. And if you are still reading at this point then maybe I've struck a chord, otherwise you are likely off to find the next quick fix. I know because I've tried both ways. The way that worked was to realize one important thing.

You see when I realized that I didn't get fat in days or weeks, I was able to accurately see a realistic time frame. I allowed myself, as a 5'10" male, to reach 220 lbs. Mmmm, nice and chunky. However, I knew it was time to change when I couldn't make it up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing. The key to my eventual success was that I realized 45 pounds was not going to disappear in a month or two.

The answer to it all lies in the numbers. At 3500 calories per pound of fat it you will only lose 4 lbs per month when you burn 500 more calories a day more than your metabolism requires for normal operation. At 1250 calories a day you would drop and aggressive 10 pounds a month. So you can see that it could a long time to lose all your weight. By starting your diet with this realism, you set yourself up for success.

If you haven't had an emotional breakdown yet, then you will reach all your weight loss goals. But if you start with a really long time to reach your goals, and you can accept that as the worst case scenario and move on then it just gets easier and easier. Start small with one pound a week. When you achieve that then you will start to feel good and it will perpetuate itself. The actual numbers each month don't matter how you feel and how your cloths fit does.

At this point I hope you realize that what diet you choice is far less important than how you approach it. In the end, a diet will get you going in the right direction, but you will keep yourself going in the right direction with realistic expectations, changing your habits, and making healthier and better choices.
