Sightseeing in Bejing is Boundless

By: Alex Gwen Thomson

History, legend, romance, charm, luxury and a world of life experiences leave even the most the savvy sightseer wondering if Bejing is a dream come true. In the wake of the spectacular 2008 Olympic extravaganza, it is quite probable that even in its illustrious tradition, Bejing has never looked so good, been as prepared or as willing to host tourists as the magical city is now. And, there is plenty to see, taste, hear, smell, feel and enjoy as the city tantalizes every sense known to woman and man.

As the capital of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Bejing is the major transportation hub of the country and effectively uses abundant railways, roads and expressways to accommodate all comers. China's third largest city has long been recognized as the political, educational and cultural center of the People's Republic.

The sprawling city is filled with treasures all of which were finely tuned and restored in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Tradition insists that no visit to Bejing is complete without a sampling of the city's famous roast duck or a visit to the Great Wall. To understand China and understand Bejing, these two cultural links must be sampled.

The Great Wall will provide serious "tourist watching" as well as a memorable viewing experience. Simply put, there is nothing like the Great Wall anywhere in the world. Consider adding a little length to your day and look into a taxi excursion beyond the normal tourist havens. Whatever you decide and wherever you end up, the Great Wall is a must see!

The Forbidden City opens at 8:30 every day. Sightseers will be delighted by the expansive courtyards that typified the grandeur of the Ming and Qing dynasty's Imperial courts. In recent years, there has been an effort to de-commercialize the wondrous Forbidden City and the attraction has regained its luster.

The world's largest square, Tiananmen Square, was a popular media vantage point during the Olympics. Mao's mausoleum is at the end opposite the entrance to the Forbidden City. The flag is raised at dawn and lowered at dusk and life in China will certainly pass before every sightseer who spends a day at the square.

The Temple of Heaven boasts vibrant public parks, lots of greenery and plenty of exercise and dancing. Along with the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven offers tourists a multitude of entertainment and contemplative options. The Beihai Park, is an island with a distinctive 17th century white pagoda and luscious gardens. This is an easy place to spend the day.

The Bejing Zoo features lakes, ponds, pavilions and striking historical buildings all housing a plethora of wildlife. Bejing gets a little quieter at the Palace of Peace or the Temple of Yonghegong, which was constructed by early Chinese emperors infatuated with Tibetan Buddhism. The Maitreya Buddha was carved from a single piece of sandalwood and is said to have changed many a life.

The Prince Gong's Mansion, Fragrant Hills and the renowned Bejing Botanical Gardens have never been in better shape. There are seasonal celebrations honoring tulips, plums, peaches and remarkable peonies as well as acres of flowering plants, picnic areas and open space.

Bejing has renovated and updated the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution. The museum traces China's military history from ancient times to the late 20th century.

No sightseer would be fulfilled until taking in a few shopping sprees. Be ready to barter on Wanfujang, Qianmen or Liulichang Streets. All shopping areas are within minutes of the subway system. Tourists crave the silk products, bags, shoes and handcrafted specials. If it cannot be found in Bejing, it cannot be found in China. That not only applies to shopping but to art, cuisine, history, entertainment, culture and beauty. Bejing is exciting and is guaranteed to stir the emotions.
