There are over 75 million pet dogs in the United States alone. Although we love our pets, we do want them to behave and act in a manner that all members of the household are happy. One of the biggest reasons dogs are taken to shelters or abandon somehow, is some sort of behavioral problem. This can range from leaving messes around the house, to barking or just not listening to their owners instruction. All of these problems can be resolved with basic dog training to teach the dog the desirable habit.

Dogs do not naturally know how we want them to act or behave. They are able to learn easily. They cannot learn if someone doesn't teach them how they are supposed to behave. This then becomes a matter of the owner sharing the proper behavior information with the dog. Many pet owners treat their pet dogs like children. To us our pets are our children. If we had children we would raise them by teaching them right from wrong and what is appropriate behavior for any given situation. They same is true for pet dogs. Whether it is a new puppy in the household that needs to be taught where to go to the potty or an older dog that has been added to the family and wants to bark at anything which is not acceptable. This also holds true for teaching them not to chew on things or dig holes in the yard. Even training them to walk on a leash so that both the owner and the dog enjoy their walks. All of these characteristics can be taught to a dog, but unless you have been extremely lucky your pet dog doesn't just naturally know these things.
Regardless of what some people might think we cannot, as owners just beat it into the dogs to do the right thing. We also cannot yell it loud enough that the pet dog will just start behaving correctly. There are proven techniques that can teach these wanted behaviors to the pet dog in a manner to make them learn and in most cases will work faster than any hitting or yelling will if that would work at all.

Even professional dogs such as show dogs need to be taught how to react to commands and gestures from their handler to ensure the proper behavior. Owners of dogs used to hunt game have to teach the dog how they want them to react to the scent or site of the quarry. This can take hours of training to ensure the correct response from the dog.
