There's nothing more embarrassing than seeing a look of distaste on someone's face when you're talking to them when you know it's caused by your bad breath. What is it that causes bad breath and how can you eliminate it if it's something that plagues you? Well, there are some pretty obvious bad breath causes. Highly pungent foods like garlic and curries can lead to short-term bad breath. But the good news is that the effects of these wear off in time. There are, of course, other bad breath causes that can sadly be more long-lasting in effect. Trapped food particles between the teeth are one of these. These particles are very attractive to the type of anaerobic bacteria that cause your breath to smell. A dry mouth with little saliva production is also a contributor to bad breath. Saliva is your mouth's natural mouthwash. Drinking alcohol can contribute to dry mouth or xerostomia, to give it its medical name. Poor oral hygiene and health is a fairly obvious cause of bad breath along with smoking and the use of other tobacco products. More seriously, bad breath can indicate an underlying medical problem, possibly a long, stomach or blood condition, or maybe diebetes. If you know that you have a problem with bad breath, how can you combat it? Taking a little extra time over basic oral hygiene each day is always the best starting point. When brushing the teeth, don't forget to brush the tongue. In fact, it's a good idea to get a tongue scraper because this device will help to remove food debris and dead cells from the indentations in the tongue that a normal toothbrush will miss. You should make sure that you book regular check-ups with your dentist so that any necessary treatment can be arranged as quickly as possible so that oral health problems don't get chance to develop into something major. If you can't brush your teeth after every meal then at least swill your mouth round with water to dislodge stray food particles that might otherwise become trapped between your teeth. Chew sugarfree gum or sugarless lozenges to stimulate saliva production. Another good habit to get into is the twice a day usage of mouthwash - morning and evening. The most sensible ones to pick are those that do not contain alcohol - far too many of them do. Quit smoking and stop drinking alcohol and drinks that contain caffeine. Eat leafy green vegetables such as parsley. They contain chlorophyll which is a natural breath freshener. All of the above tips, if practised, will help you to alleviate your bad breath symptoms.
